Aperture No. 264 is a special Fall 2026 issue guest edited by acclaimed Japanese photographer and architect Hiroshi Sugimoto. Titled “Stop Time,” the issue explores photography’s relationship with light, vision, time and the origins of image-making.

Sugimoto transforms the magazine into a kind of time machine, bringing together photography, science, art and history. Highlights include an interview with Sugimoto, his reflections on the origins and future of photography, his personal cabinet of curiosities, the history of the camera obscura, Newton’s experiments with optics, Man Ray’s Mathematical Objects, and an exploration of Sugimoto’s Enoura Observatory.

Also inside are contributions from Stephen Shore, Petra Collins, Martine Gutierrez, Lucy Ives, Brian Dillon and others, alongside reviews of contemporary photobooks.
